Countdown to the ONLY WATCH Auction, 28th September, 2013. Post #2: Backes and Strauss- Victoria Princess Red Heart

Today we bring you the first timepiece in our countdown.
The incredibly elegant and stylish "Victoria Princess Red Heart" by Backes & Strauss.

Backes & Strauss

Backes & Strauss began in 1789, by German immigrant businessmen Georg Carl Backes and is now oldest diamond company in the world.   Examples of Backes pieces were displayed at the Great Exhibition of London in 1851 and two full pages of the official catalogue were dedicated to Backes's work. In 1892 the company decided to concentrate on diamonds. Operating as 'Diamond and Gem merchants', travelling was intensified between 1904 and 1910. Today, Backes & Strauss is best known for manufacturing high-end diamond and jewel encrusted fine time pieces in conjunction with Swiss luxury watch brand Franck Muller. The main company operations are run from both Mayfair, London and Geneva in Switzerland.

The video below demonstrates the artistry of Backes & Strauss, highlighting their limited edition Regent Diamond Jubilee celebrating Queen Elizabeth's 60th year as British Monarch.

Pictured below is The Victoria Princess Red Heart Watch. Similar in style to other pieces in their Victoria Collection, and inspired by an opulent 19th century brooch from the company's archives. The watch consists of 506 Ideal Cut Diamonds and 98 Rubies set in a face and band of linking heart shapes. Mr Vartkess Knadjian, CEO of Backes and Strauss, said: “We are delighted and honoured to have been selected as one of 40 exclusive brands participating in the Only Watch auction 2013. It is very important for us to give back to the global community.”

Countdown to the ONLY WATCH Auction, 28th September, 2013. Post #1: Introduction

Only Watch is the most anticipated charity event on the Swiss Watch Industry's calendar.

Held every two years, the auction brings together some of the biggest names in the world of watchmaking.

All proceeds from the auction will finance research, organize scientific roundtables and fund International Collaborative Effort (ICE), an International program that brings together 15 leading teams worldwide who work on therapeutic strategies on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, in particular exon skipping, gene and cell therapies.

The 2011 auction comprised of 40 lots and brought in 4.5 million euros. The stand out watch that year was a Patek Phillipe stainless steel minute repeater wristwatch with tourbillon escapement, black enamel dial with a stainless steel prong buckle and reached 1.4 million euros on the day.
